Bob Armbruster
As most of you know, I have stayed close to the situation regarding my good friend, Bob Armbruster. Last week, we encouraged many of his friends to make a "final visit" to say goodbye, and last Thursday, Bob passed away peacefully. He was absolutely one of the most amazing gentlemen I have ever met, with an incredible background and an unmatched dedication to our community. It is almost a cliché to say, "he will be missed". However, in this case, Bob Armbruster's passing leaves an incredibly huge hole that will be very hard to fill.
429 of you found Wylie Walleye in the ad for Choice Lawn Care on page 4A in last week's Beacon. Our "Where's Wylie" winner this week is Pat Horn of Catawba, who wins a $20 gift certificate from Mel's Crow's Nest on Marblehead. We'll be hiding Wylie Walleye again this week in one of our ads. If you find him, register to win by mailing the form in the paper; by dropping it off at our office next to Goodwill Industries in the Beacon Place Shopping Center; e-mail your entry to

Moms in the Park! Starting this Monday, and for the first Monday of every month, a local group is asking local Moms to meet at Noon at Port Clinton's Lakeview Park to share a sack lunch and be there for children's playtime. The group hopes to have a Children's Float in the 4th of July Parade. In case of rain, the lunch will be moved to the second Monday of the month. It's that time of year again! The Port Clinton Community Band will hold its first rehearsal of the season on Monday, May 5 at 7 p.m. in the PCHS band room. Musicians of all ages are invited to participate. Just show up.
I always do my best to keep up with former news writers who worked here previously, and when I say "here", I mean in this area. I got a nice e-mail the other day from Rick Neale, who worked at the News Herald for several years, and now works for Florida Today, a 90,000 circulation daily in Melbourne, Florida. Susanne Cervenka, formerly of the Sandusky Register, also works there. Rick just informed me that he is now the Florida correspondent for USA Today, Gannett's National Newspaper. He is currently working on a roller derby story that will run in their Life section soon. Rick and Susanne arranged a tour for Mary Alice and I on a recent visit. Their operation is quite impressive.
Just a quick reminder that this Sunday is the 4th of May - or BUCKS FOR BOOMS Day. Visit any of the following quick serve establishments and order the sandwich noted and $1 will be donated to the Port Clinton Area 4th of July Celebration: Arby's regular Roast Beef Sandwich; either McDonalds locations in Port Clinton and Catawba for a Big Mac, or Wendy's for a Bacon-ator! Bon Appetit.
