As part of a continuing effort to educate Northwest Ohio youth about the wonders of nature, the Black Swamp Bird Observatory will begin taking reservations for its ninth annual "Black Swamp Nature Camp". This week-long day camp targets area middle school students entering grades 6 through 8. The camp involves a week's worth of educational activities and fun, including daily field trips, digital photography, fishing, canoeing, art projects and games. The focus is on exploring ecosystems and the interactions of plants and animals found in each. All activities are led by adult instructors, including area teachers, biologists and naturalists.
This year's focus will be the major habitat types of Northwest Ohio. Destinations for daily field trips include the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Magee Marsh State Wildlife Area, Maumee Bay State Park, Otsego Park in Wood County, Oak Openings Metropark and a number of local native grasslands.
Dates for Nature Camp are June 9th - June 13th, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The cost of the camp is $100 per student, and includes transportation to all field trip destinations, craft supplies, nature field guides (to keep!), a camp T-shirt, and snacks and beverages twice a day. Camp will begin at the BSBO Nature Center, located at the entrance of the Crane Creek State Park / Magee Marsh Wildlife Area complex on State Route #2, Oak Harbor.
Camp attendance will be limited to the first twelve paid registrants. The deadline for registration is May 15th. For questions or a detailed informational brochure, call BSBO at 419-898-4070.
