Woodcock Walk Friday Evening, April 18
Have you been hearing a strange "peenting" sound in the early evening?  Would you like to learn a little more about the American Woodcock?  Join Rebecca Hinkle, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Visitor Services Specialist, this Friday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. for a Woodcock Walk, a fun and informational evening at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.  Learn about woodcock natural history and habitat requirements, and then head outside to listen for woodcocks.  If we're really lucky, we'll have a chance to see a male woodcock doing his extravagant courtship display. Call Rebecca at (419) 898-0014 to register.

Auto Tour Open this Saturday
Are you looking for something fun to do this weekend?  Come out to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's jewel of Ohio, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.  The auto tour route is open this Saturday, April 19, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is an opportunity to travel through seven miles of the refuge which are normally closed to the public. Drive at your own pace as you travel along a well-marked route, following a self-guided tour brochure found at the route entrance.  This is a great time of year to see returning migratory ducks and geese, as well as white-tailed deer, bald eagles and other wildlife.
Make sure you stop in at the refuge's Visitor Center, too.  Explore hands-on exhibits and watch a short film about the natural and cultural history of the Lake Erie marsh ecosystem and the Great Black Swamp.  Shop for the nature lover in your life at the refuge's bookstore and take a walk on the trail!

Garlic Mustard Pulling Parties
Would you like to take part in a great service project to help wildlife?  Join Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge staff for a Garlic Mustard pulling party.  We'll be working to rid the refuge of this invasive weed on Thursdays, April 17 and 24 and May 1 and 8, as well as Saturdays, April 26 and May 3.  Pulling parties will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. Call Kathy Huffman at (419) 898-0014 for more information.
For more information about these or other Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge events, visit the refuge website, http://www.fws.gov/midwest/ottawa.  The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge entrance is located 15 miles east of Toledo or 16 miles west of Port Clinton on State Route 2.  The entrance road is located on the north side of State Route 2.
