While taking pictures at the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Port
Clinton Men's Prayer Breakfast, I learned that Stephanie Lowe was
moving on from being the Director of Salvation Army and would assume
the position of Director of Ottawa Residential Services, Inc. (ORSI).
She brought her replacement at Salvation Army, Maureen Saporini, with
her to the Tuesday morning breakfast at Magruder. Stephanie did a
tremendous job with the Salvation Army here. Shortly after taking the
job, she was thrust into being the point person for recovery efforts
following the November 2002 tornado that ripped through large sections
of Port Clinton. So, congratulations to Maureen and Stephanie. We wish
them both the best.

Despite the little April Fool's Joke I played on you a month ago, The
Beacon's website really has taken off quite nicely. But the nice thing
about a community website, the space and ability to make YOU the stars
of our website (just like you have been for 25 years in YOUR weekly
newspaper) is virtually unlimited. So, with that in mind, we are again
taking it to the next level. I have been meeting with our webmaster,
Paul Wallen about new ideas I have learned while attending a flurry of
newspaper conferences in recent months, and enhancements are on the
way. One of them is our "Kid's Fishing Day" Photo Contest.

As most of you know, I have stayed close to the situation regarding my
good friend, Bob Armbruster. Last week, we encouraged many of his
friends to make a "final visit" to say goodbye, and last Thursday, Bob
passed away peacefully. He was absolutely one of the most amazing
gentlemen I have ever met, with an incredible background and an
unmatched dedication to our community. It is almost a cliché to say,
"he will be missed". However, in this case, Bob Armbruster's passing
leaves an incredibly huge hole that will be very hard to fill.

Even though the news about the “Puller Pullout” was not good last week,
there is GOOD NEWS on the horizon! First of all, as you can see with
the front page photograph, Cleats has finished the deal to re-open what
was for many year’s Nate’s Restaurant in the Knoll Crest Shopping
Center. Also, stay tuned for more GOOD NEWS for downtown Port Clinton
and The Island House. My hope is that this double-shot of positive news
should help in recovering from the blow of last week.

I am happy to report that, for the second year in a row, The Beacon
took first place for General Excellence in the Community Newspaper
Division of the Mid Atlantic Community Papers Association contest held
in Harrisburg, PA over the weekend. I am shown here accepting the award
from Ruth Isenberg, who headed up the judging of the contest along with
journalism and graphic arts students from Bloomsburg State College.
