This Sunday, May 11, is Mother's Day. It's a day set aside to honor
the women who gave us birth, or who nurtured us, or adopted us, or who
stood in place of the "real" mother we never had - or even was somebody
who was a mom "in addition" to the biological parent who took care of
us.
Many of us had great mothers - moms who loved us, encouraged us, taught us, worked hard for us, disciplined us and rewarded us.
My mom, Helen Allen, was a person like that. She raised ten kids. The oldest five were young during the Great Depression.

It's Sunday, April 27, in the late afternoon and I just got back home
from a couple of "emergency" type errands - both unexpected. Before
sitting down to write I walked around inside the house and looked out
the windows. There are fresh blossoms on all sides: forsythia to the
west, viburnum and flowering quince on the south, yellow tulips on the
east and some herbs on the north. As well, the peonies and wisteria
and irises and many other plants are showing new growth.

Well, I'm home from a whirlwind visit to Florida and returned to work
on April 17. The trip home was pretty good, but as regular readers of
Beacon Bits know, I've had some continuing problems of pain, now
primarily centered in my left knee. I had specifically asked for a
wheelchair to get through Atlanta airport on the return trip and that
did NOT happen. This was not good news!

Hello, everyone. Today I'm writing from Florida where I'm on vacation
for ten days. A longer vacation would be nice; the weather is great and
it's been a nice change from the cold, blizzard-y days we've had up
north. But eight days (after discounting two days needed for travel) is
the time that works out for me now. I'm glad to get "away", won't
complain about not being able to stay longer and be home by the time
you read this.
I flew out of Toledo into Melbourne via Atlanta. We were airborne
12:12 p.m. last Saturday (one week ago) and as we lifted out of the
Toledo area I could see many isolated acres of farmland covered in
water.
