The Nutcracker gives a young dancer a professional experience

Each fall, aspiring ballerinas start preparing for Christmas early. In September, Alexis Dayton, a junior at Danbury High School and a student at the Toledo Ballet, auditioned to perform in the 74th annual production of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker.” The holiday ballet is staged by Lisa Mayer, The Toledo Ballet Artistic Director.

Alexis was cast in two roles, a Big Soldier in Act 1 and a Candy Cane in Act 2. Alexis balances being an active honors student at Danbury High School with classes and rehearsals at The Toledo Ballet each week. She is also active in Key Club, National Honor Society and musical and drama performances in high school.

Alexis describes herself as driven because she wants to achieve her goals in life and also because she spends countless hours each week travelling by car to dance and voice classes. Alexis has been dancing since age three and she is planning on pursuing a minor in dance or musical theatre in college. Alexis is the daughter of Ted and Lisa Dayton.

The Nutcracker will be performed at The Stranahan Theater in Toledo on December 13-14. The ballet will be accompanied by The Toledo Symphony. For ticket information, please contact the box office at 419-381-8851. You can also purchase tickets online at stranahantheater.com. Ticket prices range $24-$54.

Marblehead VFW Danbury Football Banquet

By John Kozak

The 69th annual Marblehead VFW-Danbury Football banquet was held Thursday evening November 13 at the Danbury St. Paul Lutheran social hall with fifteen varsity players attending with their fathers.  Pastor Chris Young delivered the invocation prior to the meal, which was prepared by the Lutheran Ladies and served by the Junior Varsity football team.

Afterwards Danbury Athletic Director, Drew Davie, welcomed everyone and praised those who cooked the delicious dinner.  Head Coach Bryan Dudash went into detail about the dedication and hard work of the Laker football team in which the 3-7 record does not indicate that we were out-played in every game.  We were competitive in most of the games through good weather and bad and we have a starting point for next years returning players.

Marblehead VFW Commander, Bob Peroni, emphasized the importance of not only playing football, but also other sports as a way of using teamwork in their future endeavors, no matter what career you choose in life.  Commander Peroni and Dave Groene distributed to the seniors their football portrait and the trophies to the award-winning athletes.  And a special thank-you must be given to Charlie Scott and St. Paul Lutheran church for collaborating with the Marblehead VFW to continue this long-standing tradition.
