ODNR: No Asian carp found
in western Lake Erie

After a week of intensive electrofishing and gill netting activities in Sandusky Bay, Maumee Bay and their main tributaries, officials have found no bighead or silver Asian carps in western Lake Erie. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service continue to work together to assess the current status of bighead and silver carp within western Lake Erie bays and select tributaries.
“The sampling results are very encouraging, especially since we intensely focused on areas where we believed we had the greatest chances of finding these fish,” said Rich Carter, ODNR executive administrator of fish management and research. “We look forward to the results of the environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis that will help us define future actions. We appreciate all of the efforts the Service has provided in assessing the status of Asian carp in Lake Erie.”

City moves on Waterworks plan

Tuesday night, Port Clinton City Council moved forward with an ordinance that puts the development of Waterworks Park back on the front page. The ordinance authorizes the city to enter into an agreement with the Los Angeles legal firm of Jeffer, Mangels, Butler and Mitchell to assist the city in finding a developer at the site.
The ordinance came out of the Planning and Development Committee chaired by Deb Benko. Following the abrupt withdrawal by the Indiana developer Puller Group in early 2008, many local leaders and Council members started looking for a way to revive the project that had been on ice since the banking crisis of 2008.
Benko said Council first became aware of the LA law firm shortly after Puller Group pullout. The law firm is not a development contractor, but it specializes in putting projects and developers together.

A bird walk for non-birders

The Pledge to Fledge project is an effort to mobilize everyday birders across six continents to share their interest in birding with the non-birders in their everyday lives. The Pledge to Fledge website is www.fledgetopledge.org
Magee Marsh Wildlife area will join other places around the globe during the kickoff weekend by offering a Beginning Birder walk on Saturday, Aug. 25.
Beginning at 10 a.m. (to allow the non-birders to wake up!), it will be an easy walk and binoculars will be provided for those who need them. All birders are encouraged to bring a friend, relative, neighbor, co-worker, young person or any other “non-birding” person with them for this walk. Participants should meet at the Bird Center at Magee Marsh.
If you need directions or have questions, call Mary at 419-898-0960, ext. 31.
