I found Wiley!!! No, not Wylie Walleye, Larry Wiley, the star running back of the undefeated Port Clinton football team of 1962. I had a Publishers Business Summit in Las Vegas last Saturday. I couldn’t get a flight out until late Sunday, so I made arrangements to spend some time with Larry Wiley who lives in Vegas with his lovely wife Catherine (Coleman) who graduated from PCHS in 1965. They hope to come “home” in July for the Class of 1963’s 50 year reunion and a special reunion of the ’62 football team in September. I learned all about the football teams of the early 1960’s. Larry picked me up at the hotel and took me to his home. Catherine, an avid LA Laker fan, also served me a steak dinner topped off by a delicious slice of Apple Pie. They couldn’t have been more hospitable. I can tell you, Larry still can’t get over the only blemish on the record of that team, a 6-6 tie with Perrysburg that cost them a perfect season and the outright Northern Lakes League championship.

Another busy weekend is ahead, in spite of the weather. Saturday night is the annual Magruder Hospital Charity Ball at Catawba Island Club. It is always a grand affair. Mike Schenk at CIC told me that they are trying something different this year. The Charity Ball will be a “Strolling Supper” with five food stations and lots of open seating. However, if you wish to reserve a table, call CIC TODAY to do so. They will be serving carved meat, mashed potatoes, perch and salmon along with a salad bar and dessert bar. Enjoy the Ball.
