Women in Business: Julene Market

Where do you work and what is your title?

Miller Boat Line, passenger and vehicles ferries to Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island from Catawba. Along with my brothers Billy Market and Scott Market, I'm an owner of Miller Boat Line and my primary focus is marketing our company and Put-in-Bay.

How long have you been in business?

When I wished to work for the boat line in the early1980's, the owners, my parents Bill and Mary Ann Market, tested my dedication by allowing me to operate a gift store on Catawba Point. After several years of retail, dad (finally!) gave me the nod of faith plus an advertising budget so I could accomplish what I had always wanted to do-market and promote our family business and the island area. So, over the years I've cultivated hundreds of wonderful marketing partners and business relationships.

What is the most important principle you follow in business?

A twofold answer-opportunity surrounds us, and a desire to see local businesses and families flourish.

What important woman, historically or personally, has inspired you?

My number one female role model is my mom, Mary Ann Market. Mom's deeply rooted love of the islands remained steadfast and true throughout her lifetime. She emphasized humility, passed onto me a strong "get 'er done" attitude, and she inspired in me the importance of community.
